National Meeting of the longtime running American Chemical Society (ACS). The Key Is The Chlorogenic Acid. Chlorogenic acid is prevalent mostly in green coffee beans, however it is destroyed during the roasting process that is used to make coffee drinks we’re all familiar with. It’s important that a process used in turning beans into easily consumed capsules doesn’t use heat that damages the chemical structure thus severely impacting amounts of chlorogenic acid that is present in a finished product. Once roasted to 4. However for the fullbodied person, not so rich and unroasted coffee beans – which are green as the moment they were picked – would hold the key to cheap as well as effective weight loss. In a recent study that was presented at the ACS’s spring national meeting which was in San Diego, sixteen overweight adults took, low doses of green coffee bean extracts, high doses of green coffee supplements, and a placebo. Even though the study was small, results were striking. It concluded that Subjects taking full doses of the green coffee extracts lost an average of about 1. Green Coffee Extract Benefits. Studies have suggested chlorogenic acid slows the absorption of fat during food intake as well as activating metabolism of extra fats. Chlorogenic acid has specifically been shown to inhibit the enzyme glucose- 6- phosphatase. Green Coffee contains many components. Every one of them may have the potential pharmacological effects. The key to real long term weight loss is one very important active compound that’s called Chlorogenic Acid found in green coffee beans. Chlorogenic Acid is able to decrease blood pressure, systolic as well as diastolic. Ready to Get Slimmer? Green Coffee Beans will inhibit fat absorption. They also activate fat metabolism which is done in the liver. Coffee Bean Extract Miracle Fat Burning Pill Part 2 of 2. Gaps Diet Bone Broth Fast Parasites In FishBone Broth and Lead Toxicity: Should You Be Concerned? Vladislav Ageshin/Hemera/Thinkstock. Yesterday I became aware of a study published in the journal Medical Hypotheses called “The risk of lead contamination in bone broth diets.” (1) The authors mention that consumption of bone broth may be increasing because it is recommended by advocates of both the GAPS and Paleo diets. It’s well- established that farm animals (and humans, for that matter) can be exposed to lead via food, water, air, dust and soil, and that it progressively accumulates in bone. The researchers wanted to find out whether the bones of farm animals might sequester lead, which would then be released into broth during its preparation. Does bone broth contain toxic levels of lead? To find out, they prepared chicken broth (using organic chickens) three different ways: using chicken bones; using cooked chicken meat without the bones; using chicken skin and cartilage without the bones after the whole chicken had been cooked. In each case the same tap water, cooking utensils, cookware and cooking time was used. They also included a fourth control preparation, where they followed the same procedure but used only tap water heated for the same length of time. The lead concentrations in the four different samples were as follows: chicken- bone broth: 7. As the authors point out, lead has “adverse medical effects on the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, haemopoietic system, gastrointestinal tract, renal system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system and reproductive system”. In short, too much lead wreaks havoc on every system of the body. Does this mean it’s time to quit the bone broth? Not so fast. How much lead is safe? The authors of the study express alarm about the “high” levels of lead found in the bone broth preparations they made. However, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a safety threshold of 1. On their page discussing lead and water, they explain that: Most studies show that exposure to lead- contaminated water alone would not be likely to elevate blood lead levels in most adults, even exposure to water with a lead content close to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) “action level” for lead of 1. Risk will vary, however, depending upon the individual, the circumstances, and the amount of water consumed. For example, infants who drink formula prepared with lead- contaminated water may be at a higher risk because of the large volume of water they consume relative to their body size. The protocol for reversing autoimmune disease of all kinds using the highly effective GAPS Diet. 4 important tips for making your time on the GAPS Diet as short lived and painless as possible so you can get back to eating normal again! Are you wondering why and how to start the GAPS diet with your family? We do the GAPS diet every January as a nourishing cleanse to jumpstart our nutrition for the year. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition that is characterized by too many microorganisms in the small intestine. Unlike the large intestine or. If drinking water consistently throughout the day with lead levels of 1. I don’t think it would. That might be the end of the argument right there. But there are additional factors to consider that may make lead in homemade chicken broth even less of a concern. The importance of nutrient synergy. There’s no doubt that it’s smart to minimize exposure to toxins as much as possible. But in an environment where toxins are found in foods that also contain beneficial nutrients, we must always balance the benefits of those nutrients against the potential harms of the toxins. What’s more, some nutrients protect against the harmful effects of toxins. For example, I’ve written on the blog and talked on my podcast about how selenium protects against mercury toxicity in fish. More specifically, the reason mercury is toxic is that it damages selenium- dependent enzymes that play a crucial role in protecting us from oxidative damage. This is why you’ve heard so much publicity about the dangers of consuming fish with mercury. However, what these reports neglected to consider is that if a food you consume contains more selenium than mercury, or if background selenium intake is high, mercury won’t be able to destroy all of your selenoenzymes and you’ll be protected from its toxic effects. As it turns out, certain nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamin D, vitamin C and thiamin (B1) have a similar protective effect against lead toxicity. These nutrients are abundant in Paleo and GAPS diets, and in the case of calcium, abundant in bone broth itself. Let’s take a closer look at how two of these nutrients, calcium and iron, protect against lead toxicity. Calcium. Both animal and human studies have shown that low calcium intake increases the risk of lead toxicity. In one rat study, researchers found that rats ingesting a low calcium diet had blood- lead concentrations four times higher than rats on a normal calcium diet, although the quantities of lead ingested were equal. The mechanisms by which calcium protects against lead toxicity involve complex interactions among lead, dietary calcium, intestinal calcium binding proteins and vitamin D, especially 1,2. D (the active form). Lead is known to mimic calcium in biological systems or to alter calcium- mediated cellular responses, compete with calcium in enzyme systems, impair calcium metabolism, or inhibit 1,2. D- mediated regulation of calcium metabolism. A study in the early 7. In humans, low iron status of adults has been reported to increase gastrointestinal absorption of lead. For example, lead inhibits three major enzymes that are involved with the production of heme, the ferrous (iron- based) component of hemoglobin, which is the protein that transports oxygen to the cells and tissues of the body. Though less is known about how these nutrients protect against lead toxicity, vitamin D appears to modify lead distribution once it has been absorbed, preventing its incorporation into bone. Vitamin C has been shown to have chelating properties which help remove lead from the body. And thiamin (B1) appears to inhibit the uptake of lead into cells and promote lead excretion. Food, water, soil and dust are the largest sources of exposure to lead in farm animals. It appears that cereal grains contribute most to dietary exposure to lead. Jessica Prentice, one of the worker- owners of the Three Stone Hearth community- supported kitchen in Berkeley, CA, has sent samples of their bone broth in to get tested for lead. They make their broth with pasture- raised chickens, so we’ll have at least one example of lead levels in pastured chicken broth to draw from. That said, given that the levels of lead in the chicken broth tested in the Medical Hypotheses study were below the EPA established safe upper limit for drinking water, and given the protective effect of several nutrients abundant in Paleo/GAPS diets (and even in broth itself), it seems to me that it’s quite safe to consume 2- 3 cups of bone broth per day. This is likely to be even more true if your broth is made from pasture- raised chickens. I recommend Kettle & Fire bone broth as a source of lead- free bone broth. I’ll continue to investigate this issue and report back if I learn anything that changes my opinion. Like what you’ve read? Sign up for FREE updates delivered to your inbox. I hate spam too. Fad Diets You Should Absolutely Never Try. By K. Aleisha Fetters. Every day it seems a new diet is ready to make weight loss faster and easier than ever before. Or at least they say they are. The following diets might spur short- term weight loss, but many are difficult to follow, have arbitrary rules, and a few could put your health in danger. Raw foodies say cooking destroys nutrients. Though it's true that cooking produce can sometimes reduce nutrient levels, cooked veggies still pack plenty of fiber, vitamins and minerals, and in some instances cooking actually enhances nutrients while also killing bacteria. The biggest issue with this extreme form of veganism? Food prep - - it's totally impractical, says Christopher N. Ochner, Ph. D., director of research development and administration at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. Raw foodies spend hours upon hours juicing, blending, dehydrating, sprouting, germinating, cutting, chopping and rehydrating. The diet certainly has positive points; it's heavy on fresh produce and other healthy, satisfying foods while eliminating processed fare, which in itself may spur weight loss. But your body is incredibly efficient at keeping your p. H levels where they need to be, so cutting out these foods really won't affect your body's p. H, says Ochner. Not to mention there's no research proving that p.
H affects your weight in the first place. The bottom line: The diet is strict, complicated and bans foods that can have a place in a healthy eating plan, such as meat, dairy and alcohol. For example, on the diet, those with type O blood are to eat lean meats, vegetables and fruits, and avoid wheat and dairy. Meanwhile, type A dieters go vegetarian, and those with type B blood are supposed to avoid chicken, corn, wheat, tomatoes, peanuts and sesame seeds. However, there's no scientific proof that your blood type affects weight loss. And depending on your blood type, the diet can be extremely restrictive. Its quick- fix version involves a day of fasting allowing only water and juice during a full or new moon - - and supposedly losing up to six pounds in water weight in a single day. The extended version starts with that daylong fast and continues with specific eating plans for each phase of the moon. While you'll lose some weight from not eating, it has nothing to do with the moon, and it will come right back, Ochner says. Siegal's Cookie Diet, The Hollywood Cookie Diet and the Smart for Life Cookie Diet all promise that eating cookies will help you drop pounds. Of course, you don't get to chow down chocolate- chip cookies - - you eat about 5. Then you eat a normal dinner, for a total of 1,0. If you stick to the diet, you will likely lose some weight, but by depriving yourself all day, you set yourself up for bingeing come dinnertime, Ochner says. On this diet, developed by obesity doctor Alwin Lewis, M. D., you skip breakfast and eat only five bites of food for lunch and five more for dinner. Pretty much all involve subsisting for days on only lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper mixed in water. Common side effects include fatigue, nausea, dizziness and dehydration. Plus, on an extremely low- calorie diet like this one, you are going to lose muscle, exactly the kind of weight you don't want to lose, Caspero says. Dieters replace breakfast and lunch with about 1. It's easy to get too few calories for your body to run its best, Ochner says. Besides, who really wants to take jars of baby food to work each day? We review the top 4 diets that work in 2017, and provide you with a suite of diet calculators and charts to help you diet effectively. Feeding Earthworms: Do Different Diets Affect Them and the Soil They Enrich? From beetles to butterflies and from ants to stinkbugs, people in dozens of countries regularly eat insects. Here are the most popular types of edible critters. In the short term, it does yield weight loss. It can also promote bloating and gas from all the cabbage and is lacking in protein, which is needed to preserve lean body mass. Introduction. Daily diets vary considerably around the world. Select different countries to see how consumption patterns have changed in the last fifty years. Reports from veterans of vegetarian and raw-food diets, veganism, fruitarianism, and instinctive eating, plus new science from paleolithic diet research and clinical. While I am a fan of nutrient- dense, low- calorie foods for weight loss, it should be balanced with other foods such as fruits, carbohydrates, healthy fats and lean protein. And this diet definitely hits that, limiting dieters to 8. Some iterations also prohibit eating extremely hot or extremely cold foods, preparing foods in aluminum pans, and requires dieters to space . Rumored to have been followed by Elvis Presley, this diet takes that simple fact to the extreme, encouraging people to use sedatives to stay asleep for days on end. But sleeping the days away not only starves the body and causes muscle deterioration from a lack of movement, but actually risks death: . However, there's no evidence that HCG does more than act as a placebo, Ochner says. Yes, you'll lose weight, but only due to the extreme calorie restriction. Though a health care provider may legally give you HCG injections, they're typically used to treat fertility issues in women and the FDA has not approved them for weight loss. As for over- the- counter homeopathic products that supposedly contain HCG? Those are illegal. But apparently, some people do. This weight- loss tactic has been around for decades, preying on especially desperate dieters. Here's how it goes: Ingest tapeworm eggs, let the tapeworm eat the food you consume once it gets to your intestines, and then, when you lose enough weight, get a doctor to prescribe you an anti- worm medication. But some tapeworm eggs can migrate to various parts of your body or cause other potentially life- threatening problems. Freaked out yet? Not only does consuming cotton balls in place of food deprive the body of nutrients, eating anything that isn't actually food can cause blockages in your intestines. What's more, most cotton balls aren't even made of cotton - - they're composed of bleached, synthetic fibers. Best Dog Food for German Shepherds: A Nutritionally Balanced Diet. Micronutrient Requirements for German Shepherds. German Shepherd dogs are a bit different from most other dogs in terms of feeding practices. Their puppies grow very quickly into 6. It’s important to monitor their growth and feed them according to a nutritionally balanced diet plan with lots of exercises. Proteins. Eating proteins is important to rebuild muscle and maintain cellular structure. Since German Shepherds have large muscular bodies, proteins play a vital role in their growth. That’s why they require a high- protein diet for healthy strong muscles, tissue repair and growth of strong bones. AAFCO recommends at least 1. Many nutritionists and experts recommend between 3. German Shepherd’s diet, while some German Shepherd enthusiasts encourage giving even more —as much as 4. Research done by Dr. Dan Carey at Cornell University also advocates high- protein diet for dogs as it reduces physical injuries. Degenerative Myelopathy German Shepherd Dogs R.M. Clemmons, DVM, PhD Associate Professor of Neurology & Neurosurgery Small Animal Clinical Sciences. When looking at the proteins in a dog food, high quality protein sources are just as important as the amount of protein itself. Meat is usually the main source of proteins in a German Shepherd’s diet and it’s your responsibility to make sure that it comes from lean sources, such as poultry, fish and beef, and not from meat by- products, bone or blood meals. Fats. Fat is another source of energy in German Shepherds’ diet and it helps them keep their coats healthy and shiny. According to AAFCO, adult dogs need at least 5% of fat in their daily diets, while puppies need a minimum of 8%. Almost every dog food contains more than the minimum required fat though, as it is added to enhance the flavor. Ideally, a dog food containing 1. German Shepherd dog to keep him in robust health. Vitamins and Minerals. A high- quality dog food always comes with a good amount of vitamins and minerals. Vitamins help your dog maintain its healthy coat, preserve its immune system and prevent many behavioral problems, while minerals help with anemia and various bodily functions. You must look for a dog food that contains lots of vegetables and fruits, as they are main source of vitamins and minerals. The more variety, the better. Milk, eggs, liver and vegetables, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and green beans all provide enough vitamins and minerals for a dog’s diet. Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are an essential part of any dog’s balanced meal as they are the main source of energy. A diet that provides sufficient amount of carbohydrates will keep your dog’s body from eating its own muscles. Grains are the primary source of carbohydrates and, unlike any other dogs, German Shepherds are good with wheat- based carbohydrates and other grains as they don’t usually show symptoms of wheat- based allergies. However, it’s recommended to avoid wheat, corn and soy based carbohydrates in general because they are not easily digestible. On the other hand, sweet potatoes, barley, rice and oats are easily digestible grains and a great source of carbohydrates. Peas are also a quality source of carbohydrates and rich in fibers. Water. Nutritionally balanced food is not the only necessary part of a dog’s diet to keep him healthy. Fresh and clean drinking water is also a very important part of your dog’s daily requirements. Fresh & clean water is necessary to flush toxins out of your German Shepherd’s body, to aid digestion and absorb nutrients, while it also helps maintain a constant body temperature. Due to their high energy levels and working lifestyles, German Shepherds lose a substantial amount of water from their body. If they remain thirsty for long, they can quickly become dehydrated and can die. That’s why it’s important, for your German Shepherd’s health, to have access to clean and fresh water at all times. With the regular supply, they will be able to maintain the appropriate water balance in their body by drinking water whenever they need. Drinking excess water is harmful for large dogs like German Shepherds, as it is known to cause bloat, which is fatal. Dogs suffering from bloat only have a 5. Ingredients to avoid in dog food. German Shepherds have a large appetite and they can eat pretty much anything they are given, but there are some ingredients which do not sit well with them. Before purchasing a dog food from the market, pay close attention to the top 5 ingredients and make sure none of them comes from low- quality meats and grains. First, check for any meat by- products in top ingredients. If a particular dog food contains meat by- product as its main source of protein, avoid it, since it is the lowest form of meat proteins and not at all healthy for dogs. Meat by- products contain animal parts that are not considered good for human consumption and sometimes even come from dead animals or expired supermarket meat. The meat proteins must come from whole meat or better, meat meals which is essentially the same as meat, only without water. It has nearly 3. 00% more protein than fresh meat. Another thing to avoid in dog food is bone meal (or bone manure) as it is essentially a mixture of finely and coarsely ground animal bones and slaughter- house waste products. It is commonly used as an organic fertilizer for plants and is toxic for dogs to consume. Also avoid foods that contain fillers like corn syrup and soy. Fillers are ingredients with zero calories and zero nutrients, as they provide very little to none nutrition to a dog. They pass right through a dog’s stomach and cause many gastric problems and allergies. Food containing artificial preservatives, colors and flavors must be avoided as these are well known to cause many allergic reactions in German Shepherd dogs. Common Health Problems in German Shepherds. German Shepherds are normally fit, healthy dogs with an average lifespan, but there are certain health issues they are prone to catching more often than other dogs. We are only going to discuss some of the health issues and diseases here, ones that can be controlled and avoided by feeding high- quality dog food to your dog and giving it lots of exercise. Bloat. Gastric Dilatation- Volvulus, commonly referred to as bloat, is a serious health issue and life- threatening medical condition for large deep- chested dogs, such as the German Shepherd dogs. It’s basically a condition when a dog’s stomach fills with gas, food, or fluids, making it expand like a balloon and rendering it unable to escape gases. In some cases, the dog’s stomach will rotate or twist. It is a fatal condition which, if not immediately treated by a veterinarian, can be life- threatening. Bloat is leading cause of death in dogs after cancer. To help prevent bloat, it is best to feed a dog at least 2 small meals a day, instead of a single, large meal. Restrict the amount of water your dog can drink immediately after eating. Also avoid any type of exercise an hour before or after meals. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia. A New Health Report Ranks The Paleo Diet Dead Last—But Is It Really That Bad? Even the Macrobiotic diet, which one panel expert called . So is going Paleo—the most googled diet of 2. We asked Gretchen Spetz, RD, nutritionist at the Cleveland Clinic, to hash out the pros and cons, and give us some straight talk on the much- debated diet. Let's start with the CONS. News and World Report may be right about this: The Paleo diet is not easy to follow for more than a few months (or a few days). Because the diet cuts out several food groups, it may be hard to sustain long- term, says Spetz. People like to eat grains, and it can get very tiring to constantly be operating under this . There are also many definitions and versions of the Paleo diet, so it can be hard for someone to follow. It may operate under false pretenses: Guess what? You've evolved—and your digestion system has evolved—since our Paleolithic ancestors walked the Earth a few millions years ago, but the diet works under the assumption that we have the same gut health as our ancestors, which we don't. Because of their nutrient content, whole grains are linked to a variety of health benefits. One significant review, published in. The Paleo Diet, otherwise known as the “Caveman Diet,” is hugely popular at the moment. And lots of folks want to know how it plays with diabetes. Forget about those grains. When our Paleo ancestors settled down and began raising crops such as wheat and rice, that’s where our troubles began, according to Paleo. Habitual Marijuana Use and the Paleo Diet: What a Long Strange Trip it’s Been. How to Really Eat Like a Hunter-Gatherer: Why the Paleo Diet Is Half-Baked It cuts out grains, legumes, dairy, and many processed foods because they're thought to cause GI problems. But the truth is, for the majority of the population, these are safe and healthy. We've been eating these foods for a long time, says Spetz. It can be high in saturated fat: While research is beginning to suggest that saturated fat isn't as big of an evil as we once thought, experts still don't recommend overdoing it. If you're operating on a version of the Paleo diet that allows you to eat bacon, T- bone steak, and loads of coconut oil whenever you want, it may negatively affect your heart health, says Spetz. And onto the PROS . The Paleolithic period represents just the last two million years of human evolution. What did our bodies evolve to eat during the first 90% of our time on Earth?Anything that comes in a bag, a box, or a can is discouraged on this diet, so it definitely gets people cooking more fresh, whole foods and away from processed convenience foods loaded with sugar and salt. A recent study also linked cooking at home to consuming fewer calories. It packs plenty of nutrients: The diet really stresses vegetables and fruits, so you end up getting plenty of fiber and healthy carbs, despite cutting out grains and legumes, says Spetz. And fortified almond and coconut milks, as well as dark leafy greens, help you meet your calcium quota without dairy. It can be low in saturated fat: You can tailor the diet so that it's not ridiculously high in fat, says Spetz. There's nothing that requires you to eat bacon at every meal, or slather everything with coconut oil. A reminder to Paleo eaters why they don't want to eat delicious grains and legumes. Lectins contribute to leaky gut, create an immune response, and can lead to food. The Gluten-Free Low-Carb Paleo (GFLCP) is now hitting the mainstream. This is essentially the same kind of high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb diet I’ve been. Leaner meats and fish are definitely allowed and encouraged, as well as oils containing healthy unsaturated fats like olive and walnut. It emphasizes quality: The Paleo diet emphasizes consuming the highest quality proteins you can find (e. That's good news from a sustainability, humane, and nutritional standpoint—for example, health experts say that grass- fed beef may contain less total fat, a greater proportion of omega- 3 fatty acids, and more antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin E than conventional beef. Bottom line: There are healthy ways to interpret and follow this diet, if you want to—it just might take some planning and weekend meal prep. And while more research is needed to make definitive health claims, some small preliminary studies have linked the diet to reduced blood pressure, weight, and waist circumference; and increased HDL . If you're going to give it a whirl, Spetz recommends aiming for a lot of variety within the confines of what you're .
